Organizations are recommended to follow international standards and guidelines applicable to the marine ecosystems they are operating in, such as the Convention on Biological Diversity guidelines; IUCN Red List and Regional Assessments; OSPAR indicators; BIOcean 5D Marine biodiversity assessment and prediction across spatial, temporal and human scales, a 2024 framework for marine biodiversity assessment developed by an international taskforce and published by Lenfest Ocean Program in 2024; the European Union’s Marine Strategy Framework Directive; as well as a 2024 harmonization study by the European Commission’s Joint Research Center regarding biodiversity monitoring and assessment methodologies for European marine ecosystems.
